The Kuqa County has a temperate continental climate, with an average annual temperature of 11.4 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 64.5 mm and the frost-free period lasts for 266 days on average.
The Kuqa County contains soil-rich geothermal resources. It is an important base especially for the Tarim Oil and Gas Development projects. The natural gas reserve comprises two trillion cubic meters - which accounts for more than 90% of all proven reserves in the Tarim Basin. There are also oil reserves of 700 million tons, accounting for more than 70% of proven reserves. The well known oil and gas fields are the Yakerla, Tahe, Donghetang, Yaha, Yiqikelike and Dalaoba. There are also proven coal reserves of 1.56 billion tons and Rock salt reserves of 36 million tons.
Kuqa was one of the big powers in the Western Regions called Qiuci in the old times. It had been a center of politics, economy, culture and Buddhism in this area from the second to the 14th century.
The Kilzil Thousand Buddha Caves are located 73km west of Kuqa. Years of war and natural erosion have destroyed some of them, so that now there are 236 grottos left, which house about 10,000 square meters of mural paintings.
In the first century, the Subashi Temple was built, 23km north of Kuqa. It reached its peak during the 6th-8th centuries. During later years, the temple hosted over 10 thousand monks and many hierarchs came from central China to promote and develop Buddhism. It was destroyed by wars of the 9th century, so that today only the Subashi Ruins remain.
The Kuqa Great Mosque is the second large mosque in Xinjiang. It is believed to be constructed in the 1500s. The prayer hall is about 1,500 square meters an con hold about 3,000 persons.
