Modern-day Shaoxing sits on the site of the capital of the Spring and Autumn Period Kingdom of Yue. Around the sixth century BC, Yue had a sinicised ruling elite which fought a number of wars against its northern archrival Kingdom of Wu. Shaoxing became a subprefecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Under the Republic of China, it became a county. And under the People's Republic of China, it became a city.

Located between 29.14 and 30.16 degrees north latitude and 119.53 and 121.14 degrees east longitude, northeast of Zhejiang province. Lying on the south bank of the Qiantang River mouth, it borders Ningbo to the east, Taizhou to the southeast, Jinhua to the southwest, and Hangzhou to the west.

Shaoxing is one of the places full of vitality in economic development. Shaoxing generated a gross product of 108.84 billion yuan in 2003, an increase of 15% over the previous year, and per capita gross product on average hit more than 3,000 dollars. Shaoxing economic aggregate was the 29th among national big and medium-sized, per capita gross product was the 24th, and gross financial income reached 10.73 billion yuan, including local financial income of 5.05 billion yuan, rose by 26.3% and 34 % respectively.

Lu Xun's residence is preserved near the middle of the city, and has become a tourist destination. East Lake is a traditional scenic area just out of town. Shaoxing has the Tomb of Yu the Great.

The Chinese rice wine is known as Shaoxing Wine or simply Shao Wine. The brewery takes the natural process with the "pure" water of Jianhu-Mirror Lake. It has a unique flavour and a reputation throughout the nation and internationally. It is used both as liquor and in cooking, and as a solvent for Chinese herbal medicated ointment.
